Foodie Favorite: Sushi of Gari

Foodie Favorite: Sushi of Gari

When I’m really craving good quality sushi, Gari is always my top choice.  I’m pretty sure my first ever experience with sushi was here.  I love everything about Gari, from the environment and decor, to the service, and obviously the quality of the sushi.  I love how it can offer traditional sushi,  not too fusion, exotic sushi, but it does venture out and creates incredible pieces that feel like a whole plate of flavors in one little bite.

It’s a NYC classic and there are different locations, but my favorite is the one in Columbus Circle.  It’s small and always full, but it doesn’t feel crowded; intimate but at the same time it’s energetic.

I don’t always know how to order because I always want to try new things and I like having a couple courses of sushi, so ordering Omakase helps a lot.  If you don’t have the time (or hunger) for a long Omakase serving, I have a couple favorites from there that you can order from the menu.

  • Seared Fatty Tuna
  • Fried Oyster (with rice)
  • Salmon with stewed tomato
  • Red Snapper
  • Sea Urchin (uni)
  • Tuna with tofu sauce
  • Eel with avocado
  • Tuna with pickle
  • Yellow Tail with Sesame Sauce

Obviously most people come for the sushi, but besides that which is incredible, just as amazing is their Green Tea Mille Feuille, it’s so decadent and yet light, there’s really nothing like it. With so many incredible and exotic sushi places like Masa, Gari has maintained it’s game and updates their menu, while still staying true to traditional sushi, for any foodie in the city, it’s a definite must!
